Firestop Cavity Barriers
Cavity barriers to compartmentalise a building in the event of a fire
The issue of fire in buildings is a complex one. Cavity barriers are usually sections of fire-stopping material which are fitted within building cavities - horizontally at each floor, and vertically at each party wall. Should a fire break out, these barriers help with fire compartmentation.
This firestopping method is an effective way to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through walls and floors. Using cavity barriers will make any domestic or commercial building a safer environment. Cavity barriers must be correctly located and fixed in the method prescribed by the manufacturer. |
This includes ensuring the material proposed is appropriate for the space requiring to be sealed. The team at Middlesex Firestopping in Buckinghamshire are diligent and knowledgeable and we advise our clients on the most appropriate fire stopping products for each aspect of their building.
Cavity barriers in external walls
A cavity in the external wall of a building can act as a chimney and provide an easy route for flames, gases and smoke to spread from one part of a building to another. Unsealed cavities can allow air to be drawn in and smoke to vent out, enabling the fire to spread much faster through the facade.
External wall cavities are often required to provide drainage, or drainage and ventilation. In these instances, an intumescent strip is also required. The intumescent elements are activated during a fire by heat, and are designed to expand and close the cavity.
By installing carefully selected vertical and horizontal cavity barrier products to sub divide and compartmentalise concealed cavities, the rapid spread of fire from one section of a building to another is prevented.
