Fire Doors
Fire doors play a crucial role in fire safety by serving as a barrier that helps prevent the spread of fire and smoke within a building. Here are key reasons why fire doors are essential:
Fire doors are an integral part of fire safety systems, playing a vital role in protecting lives, facilitating safe evacuation, and minimizing the impact of fires on both people and property.
Middlesex Firestopping are certified third-party installers of fire doors. The installation of fire doors must be completed by someone who is trained, certified and competent. We at Middlesex Firestopping recognise that fire doors which are incorrectly installed and fitted with incompatible components invalidate certification and will not provide adequate protection for the occupants of the building. Why do we need fire doors?
Fire doors play a major role in the fire safety and protection of all buildings covered by the Fire Safety Order (FSO). It is important that fire doors are inspected correctly and maintained in order to ensure compliance. Failure to do so can place property and lives at risk and is likely to result in criminal prosecution.
Under the FSO, the responsible person for the building must carry out a fire safety risk assessment and implement and maintain a fire management plan. Middlesex Firestopping can help any company that needs work to be undertaken following a Fire Risk Assessment. |
Intumescent strips
A fire door must be fitted with approved intumescent strips which help achieve the fire door rating. When subjected to heat, the intumescent strips expand and seal the gap between the door edge and the frame. Intumescent seals can be fitted within the door frame or into the door edge. The hardware used to fit the door must also have its’ own individual test evidence to show that it is fit for purpose.
Fire doors can vary greatly in design. The most common type of fire door is a FD30, which will last a minimum of 30 minutes in event of a fire. FD60 fire doors, are most commonly used in commercial settings and last up to 60 minutes. |
Specially constructed fire doors can also have a rating of 120 minutes or more. Always remember your fire compartment is only as good as all the elements fitted within it, for example if you fit a 30 minute fire door into a 60 minute partition then you are only achieving a 30 minute fire rating. This is often a mistake that occurs when designing and constructing buildings and it is the responsibility of the building owners and installers to understand and prevent this from happening.
